Spring Break Plans

Spring Break Plans

I’ve never done anything really exciting for spring break. I visited my family in Portland one year but that was about it. This spring is probably the first spring break where I don’t know what I am going to do. I have the chance to go to Florida, home or I can just stay at Mount Union.

If I go to Florida, I’m obviously going to have a good time with my friends, have an actual warm spring break and I’ll get to relax. That doesn’t sound bad at all. The main problem is money because I never really have a lot of that green stuff.

If I go home, it will be snowing like it did last spring break, so that’s no fun. I may go sledding if there is enough snow though. You can never be too old for sledding. I won’t do anything productive other than catching up on movies that I’ve been waiting to watch.

If I stay at school, I’ll be helping the guys who may make it to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. My goal is to represent Mount Union one day at that national tournament, and I know if I was training for it, I’d want good drill partners, which is what I want to do for my teammates now. I’d also work as a student ambassador, so I’d be making money and staying healthy.

Most people will be going home over spring break, maybe even on vacation with their friends, but this spring break, I’m most likely going to be doing something productive for the first time ever.

The Many Uses of Dryer Sheets

The Many Uses of Dryer Sheets

Some people think dryer sheets are only used for … well, dryers. Not anymore, I’ve discovered this simple sheet can do so much for the simplest things.

1.  Place one in your car, under a seat so nobody can see it, and wait a day. The next time you get in your car, you will smell the difference.

2.  Put one in your wallet, it’ll make your money smell great.

3.  Put one in your dresser or where ever your clothes may be.

4.  Wipe it on your skin to keep bugs away.

5. Put one in the toilet paper roll. Stick it in the actual roll and every time you use it, it will release just a little bit of fresh air.

6.  And, basically any old bag, book, shoe, compartment or cabinet will benefit from having one of these sheets in there.

These are just a few ways a dryer sheet can be used. I’m quickly realizing that even the cheap dryer sheets work well and they come in such a large quantity that you can use it anywhere and for anything! Dryer sheets are simple yet they’ll surprise you. So next time you see someone smell your money, just know that it’s because of that dryer sheet you just put in your wallet.

‘Drive’ Movie Review

This past weekend, the University showed the movie Drive starring Ryan Gosling (the guy from the Notebook) at the Mount Union Theatre. This movie was made after the book, so I am assuming the book is better than the movie. I never actually read the book, but when are movies ever better than the book?

In the beginning of this movie, it felt like a 80s movie because of the font used and the music. The first scene had the driver, Gosling, driving a get away car for two robbers, so I once again assumed this movie was similar to the Transporter trilogy with Jason Statham, an action guy. It wasn’t. The Transporter trilogy is known for incredible action scenes where as this movie is more of a pure story line.

The majority of the beginning of the movie was just like the beginning of most movies. It was an introductory to the characters, who they are, what they do and why they are important to the movie. The driver was a silent man and an anti-hero type character with a sweet jacket. He lives in an apartment and he starts spending time with a young woman and her son. When her husband is released from jail is when the movie starts to get much more interesting.

This movie isn’t a typical American movie, probably because the director isn’t American, but that’s beside the point. It was much more about appreciating the story of the movie rather than ACTION, ACTION, ACTION!!! There was good driving, guns and blood, but that wasn’t the point of the movie, which is why I think some of my friends didn’t like the movie. The soundtrack of the movie was quite interesting as well.

I would recommend this movie to my friends who appreciate movies. I wouldn’t recommend this to my friends that don’t know a good movie when they see one. It’s modern and unpredictable. It’s got love and money, the simplest subject in most movies, yet it is still one of a kind.

Final Stretch of the Season

It is almost the end of the wrestling season for me. Although it started over four months ago, this season went by fast. It’s always a bad and good thing when the season ends as I don’t get to do the sport I love and I don’t work out as much, but then again I get to rest my body and I get to eat whatever I want now.

I’ve had a good season personally. I’ve wrestled a variety of wrestlers everyone from novice wrestlers to a NCAA Division III National Champion. My record might not show that I’ve improved since freshman year, but the competition I’ve wrestled was tougher than last year, and I beat guys this year I probably wouldn’t have beat last year.

I am most likely done with my competition for the year, but I will continue practicing with the varsity wrestlers since they still have the OAC Tournament and possibly the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Practicing with them not only makes them better, but also me as well. I hope that when I am on varsity, I will have teammates that will still practice although their season may be done.

I am nearly half way done with my college wrestling career, which feels weird since it seems like it just began. My ultimate goal by the end of college is to become an All-American/National Champion. It’s a goal that I thought seemed unrealistic in high school, but now I know I can do it.

The season is almost over, and where one ends, another one starts. Baseball is officially practicing and I am one of the athletic training students for the team, so we’ll see how the season goes.

Some of My Family History

At my age, my grandfather joined the Army and was carrying around a flamethrower for nine months.

It’s Black History Month and it is also a Leap Year, which means that there are 29 days this month. It seems like in grade school we only learned about black history in February. It is always interesting to know what this country has gone through ever since the country was founded.

I feel like I could always learn more about the black history but the thing that interest me the most is my family’s history. As I was doing a family project in the eighth grade, I had learned that my great-great grandparents escaped slavery. All I know for sure is that they were both from Alabama and somehow ended up in New York. After that, I’m not too sure what happened. I’m pretty sure they took their master’s name, Johnson. My last name is Johnston basically because my great-grandfather didn’t like my grandfather, so he added a “t” to Johnson.

I never met my great-grandfather, but I like my grandpa, so I’m keeping the name as is. At my age, my grandfather joined the Army and was carrying around a flamethrower for nine months. We’ve come a long way as a country since then. I’m proud of my grandfather for what he’s done and he’s proud of me for being in school.

I don’t know too much about my family history, but I know enough to know where my roots are generally from. If you’ve got any interesting ancestry stories, tell me because I am always interested in personal family history.  Every body has their own unique story.

I have numerous scars on my hand and face from wrestling. Most are small, but some will always be visible. People sometimes ask me if it hurts. Well, yeah it hurts! Individuals sometimes ask me “Why would you purposely do something that hurts you?” I don’t wrestle to get hurt, I wrestle to simply win. Hurting our opponents is just part of the game.

Wrestling is like any other contact sport; you are going to get hurt nearly every day of practice. I get scratched, head-butted, slammed, fingers mangled and twisted, slapped, my eye gets poked and basically any other possible way of being hit. I don’t wrestle to get hurt because that would be no fun at all. Getting hurt is just part of the sport … it is just in the way of my goal in the end. I embrace the pain though, because without it, the goal I plan to reach in the end won’t seem as earned.

“I hate this class. This work is stupid!” I hear this once in awhile from others and myself. Classes aren’t meant to be stupid as they are meant to benefit you in the end. I really don’t like math, but it is a class I must take, so I might as well embrace it.

College altogether is tough. It isn’t meant for people who aren’t willing to put in the time, but for those who do, there’s a degree in the end that they have rightfully earned.

Spring Semester is Underrated

Spring Semester is Underrated

Fall semester was easily the hardest semester I’ve been through. It was only my third semester of college, but it was easily the most difficult. OK. I did take a dance class, which made life easier, but all of the other classes were definitely not as easy.

This spring semester seems like a joke to me, compared to last semester at least. I shouldn’t have that mindset though. I should be going into this semester just as hard as I did in the fall so my grades will improve, but I like things to be easy so I am just going to take it lightly. Some of my classes are lower on the workload, but they still matter. After this semester, I will be half way done with college. Basically, I need to take this semester just as seriously as I did the last, or else my grades will be lower than they were last semester.

I am telling myself this so that if my grades are lower at the end of the semester, I deserve to be hit by someone who read this.

What am I supposed to do?

I’ve been told my whole life that I should go to school and after school I should get a job. So, I’m at school and I’m dedicated to athletic training, but where am I going to get a job? I want to move out of my parents’ house and have a home of my own, but where am I going to go? How fast am I going to get a job after college? I’m still not sure what my minor is going to be. When I choose classes, I’m never really sure what my best options are either.

I chose to come to Mount Union right before I graduated, which was a little late for some people. I wasn’t immediately sure like some people, but I know I made a good decision. What about a job though? I’m not sure where I want to work. I can stay here in Ohio or I can move just about anywhere and find an athletic training job, but where do I want to go? Will my resume be competitive enough to get me a job? I can work at a high school or I can choose to work in the NFL or with any other professional leagues, but I’m not sure what I want to do.

My grandpa once told me “Life is like an ocean, swim with the current and go with the flow.” I think of this every time I’m not sure what to do.

Some people know exactly what they are doing, they have all of their classes planned for each semester until they graduate and they even know what graduate schools they want to go to and so on. They are so prepared that they make me feel as if I’m not prepared at all. In reality, I’m doing just fine. I have a general idea of what I want to do and I am about to be in my spring semester of my sophomore year, so I still have plenty of time to make decisions.

If you don’t know what you want to do, you’re not alone. Being at school is a good start, but you must figure out what you want to do or else you’re going to waste four years and a lot of your own money.

I have trouble choosing what I want to eat some days, but that is a decision that will only affect me for a short period of time. When it comes down to choosing a place to live, the job I want, maybe even the woman I’ll marry, I’m going to take my time and think about it. It isn’t something I want to take lightly since I’m going to stick with all of those things for quite some time.

Waffles or Pancakes?

Waffles or Pancakes?

The age-old question must be answered. This is a very simple question. Which do you prefer, waffles or pancakes? I am a morning person, which means I love breakfast and everything about it. I love eating cereal, eggs, ham, bacon, yogurt and fruit, but when it comes to waffles or pancakes, I am not sure which I prefer sometimes.

My best friends and I cannot be better friends simply because we cannot agree on the biggest dilemma of them all. One day over the summer, we decided to go onto chatroulette.com and surveyed everyone to find out if they prefer waffles or pancakes. One rule of quick advice: go on that website during the day, it’s simply safer for your viewing. After around four hours of polling strangers, we came across a pretty even battle. It was like flipping a coin; you have the same chances every time. There are simple reasons why people like one or the other – sometimes the taste, sometimes it is easier to spread the butter or sometimes the pool of syrup or other fruit fits just perfect in those little pockets of the waffle. No matter what it is, people have a simple reason that forces them to choose one over the other.

We had to get more creative with this. We came up with a few other possible scenarios.

  • Best pancakes you’ve ever eaten VS. best waffles you’ve ever eaten
  • Frozen waffles VS. frozen pancakes
  • Kresge Court waffle maker VS. chef-made pancakes
  • Mother-made waffles VS. Mother-made pancakes
  • Gross waffles VS gross pancakes
  • Which one taste better at dinner?
  • Why isn’t French toast in this poll?
  • Why can’t I make two waffles with a pancake in the middle?
  • Well… why wouldn’t you make two pancakes with a waffle in the middle?

The list goes on, so much that you eventually get back to the same question, waffles or pancakes? I have to know everyone’s opinion on this important matter. Sometimes I can’t go to sleep simply because I can’t believe how even sided it is! There has to be a definitive one-sided winner.

Let me know what you prefer. Overall, I prefer pancakes.

Watch the video LAST. If you watch it early, it will take away the excitement of knowing why it is #1 on this list.

I’ve decided to make a Top 10. Everyone loves a good Top 10 of anything and if it is awesome, then who wouldn’t want to read it? I’ve recently been excited about a few things lately, things that have or haven’t even happened yet. Basically, just read this list and I hope something on it makes you smile.

10. Back to the Future: Trilogy. Travel back in time with a Delorean? I’ve seen these movies multiple times and I keep finding new things I didn’t realize before. Good job Spielberg. These movies had action, comedy, romance, time travel and even a dog. Back to the Future is awesome.

9. History section of the library. There are very few people in the history section of the library, which means I am able to get my studying, homework and blogs completed. The history section, it’s awesome.

8. Gerard Butler. I realized that I have a man crush on him. He is always the toughest and manliest in movies, and he always wins. He also was the Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera and has an amazing voice. I don’t sing well. It doesn’t matter if I sing well, it only matters if girls think I sing well and it is a lot easier to get girls when you have a voice like Gerard Butler. Gerard Butler, he’s awesome.

7. Christmas sweaters. They are only in fashion for about a month and everyone notices when you wear one. They are usually made with love or in China, but they are always warm and people are usually uber jealous of your sweater. Christmas sweaters, they are awesome.

6. People who read my blog. I like attention just like any other person and when people read my blogs and tell me nice job, it’s a good feeling. I like writing, but I never see my audience or hear their applause. The only way I know is if there is a comment or if someone tells me they read it. Readers are awesome.

5. Women that don’t wear make-up. Most men would agree, we prefer a woman without make up and also dyed hair. I don’t mind girls with make up or dyed hair, I just have simple preferences. Women without make-up are awesome.

4. Letters in the mail. I’ve already made a post about this, but simply getting a letter from a friend in the mail makes my day way better. Friends that send me letters are awesome.

3. Anything free. Free t-shirts, free scholarships (money), free food, free massages, free Play-Doh, free socks and free laundry, etc. Free stuff is awesome and usually comes at no cost to you, which is what makes it free. Free stuff is awesome.

2. Peaches. I just love peaches. They are awesome. The Presidents of the United States of America even made a song about peaches titled “Peaches.” Peaches are awesome.

1. This video. I love dancing and it is fun for everyone, no matter what style. These people are insane. They are awesome.

This list isn’t the most awesome thing in the world, but I hope it brought you into my little world for just a few minutes. I like to change things up once in awhile. Next semester will be interesting since I have only one class on Tuesday and for the first time I start class at 9 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. This is awesome.
