So since I am soon to be graduating from the University of Mount Union (yes the countdown has begun), I have been revamping my LinkedIn profile, resume and found myself reading many more professional articles. Whether it’s job advice, insight to personal or professional growth, I am usually drawn in by the author. Recently, I came across one from Jonah Berger, who talkes about topics like what makes ideas viral and products spread contagiously? The professor studies social epidemics, or how products, ideas and behaviors catch on and become popular. He examines how individual decision making and social dynamics (Ex: social influence) between people generate collective outcomes such as social contagion and trends.

Since I am usually trapped in the middle of simple decisions all the time, something I am trying to improve on, I found his article extremely helpful. I hope you do too!

It appears as if college students always seem to lack one thing – money. Students always tend to use the phrase “I’m just a poor college student.” So much money is spent on tuition, textbooks, food and groceries each semester. Even though all this money is spent, it is often times hard to hold down a steady job due to a heavy academic load and busy schedule.

At Mount Union though, this is not the case. On campus, there are so many ways and opportunities to make a few bucks and even gain just a little more than that in the process. Mount Union offers many on-campus employment opportunities, which vary from working in an administrative office and working in the MAAC to being a science laboratory assistant and being an academic tutor in a class. There are even opportunities to earn money working closely with freshmen and the incoming freshmen class. At Mount Union, you can be employed or take part in work study at just about any place on campus.

Holding a job on campus, however, does not just allow you to make a few extra dollars and offset your college tuition though. It provides so much more. It allows you to get involved and put yourself out there. It gives you the chance to meet new friends and form relationships with people you would not have had the opportunity to without the job. It presents the ability to get to know others. A campus job also helps you to better adapt to campus life and become more familiar with the campus itself including where things are located, who to go to for certain issues and where the best hang out spots are.

Just take me for example. I currently hold a job in Beeghly Hall in the Office of the President. I began working there last year during the second semester of my freshmen year. Not only have I been given many unique opportunities and experiences through this job, but also I have met and formed relationships with many extraordinary people. It truly has been an amazing experience that I would not trade for anything.

So when going to college don’t let the aspect of money wear you down. There are always ways to earn a few extra bucks on campus and gain just a little more than that along the way!

What am I supposed to do?

I’ve been told my whole life that I should go to school and after school I should get a job. So, I’m at school and I’m dedicated to athletic training, but where am I going to get a job? I want to move out of my parents’ house and have a home of my own, but where am I going to go? How fast am I going to get a job after college? I’m still not sure what my minor is going to be. When I choose classes, I’m never really sure what my best options are either.

I chose to come to Mount Union right before I graduated, which was a little late for some people. I wasn’t immediately sure like some people, but I know I made a good decision. What about a job though? I’m not sure where I want to work. I can stay here in Ohio or I can move just about anywhere and find an athletic training job, but where do I want to go? Will my resume be competitive enough to get me a job? I can work at a high school or I can choose to work in the NFL or with any other professional leagues, but I’m not sure what I want to do.

My grandpa once told me “Life is like an ocean, swim with the current and go with the flow.” I think of this every time I’m not sure what to do.

Some people know exactly what they are doing, they have all of their classes planned for each semester until they graduate and they even know what graduate schools they want to go to and so on. They are so prepared that they make me feel as if I’m not prepared at all. In reality, I’m doing just fine. I have a general idea of what I want to do and I am about to be in my spring semester of my sophomore year, so I still have plenty of time to make decisions.

If you don’t know what you want to do, you’re not alone. Being at school is a good start, but you must figure out what you want to do or else you’re going to waste four years and a lot of your own money.

I have trouble choosing what I want to eat some days, but that is a decision that will only affect me for a short period of time. When it comes down to choosing a place to live, the job I want, maybe even the woman I’ll marry, I’m going to take my time and think about it. It isn’t something I want to take lightly since I’m going to stick with all of those things for quite some time.

This weather is ridiculous. I thought it was supposed to be “April showers bring May flowers” ?? It’s been raining almost every day. Ugh … it makes it seem a little less like summer. :[

Tuesday, the one day it didn't rain this week, the boyfriend and I went to the Cleveland Zoo. I absolutely looove it there! I am such a huge fan of all animals and my favorite animals in the entire world are giraffes so I always take a ton of pictures with them. Also, the elephants are back with a whole new setup and it looks really nice. It was a beautiful day to be outside and then after that we went to Dave & Busters and played games for the rest of the night. It's so nice when I get a day off to just have some fun. :]

As I’ve been talking about in my past posts, I recently started at the Winking Lizard Tavern and went through nine days of extensive training and tests. It’s been so fun and I’ve loved the challenge of learning new things but it’s sooo awesome that my training is finally over!! I started serving on my own last night and it went great. It was Friday the 13th but thankfully nothing scary happened.  They have me scheduled a lot this upcoming week so I’m really excited! I LOVE my new job :]

A lot of college students still haven’t even taken finals yet and it’s so nice that I was able to train for two weeks already and be ready to start this job. That, as I’ve said before, is one of the many things I love about Mount Union. :]

Well, hello again :]

As I wrote in my last blog, I’m working at the Winking Lizard Tavern this summer.  I did the whole internship thing last summer and I really am trying hard to make a ton of money this summer because I graduate in December!! Aahhh.

It’s been so fun so far working there. They have an extensive training process, which includes nine days of shadowing, hands-on work and a ton of tests.  Their menu is very large, not to mention they have over 250 different kinds of beer that I should be able to answer customers’ questions about.

Luckily, since school is out, I have the time to study when I am at home and I’ve been doing really well on my tests.  I have three more days of server training and then I finally get to serve on my own! We also just opened the patio because it’s so nice outside; I hope I’ll be able serve outside this summer because I looooove being outdoors. :]

That’s really all my summer has consisted of so far. I’ve worked every day since I moved home and I had Mother’s Day off. They wanted me to work the next seven days in a row, but I asked if I could do a double one day instead and they were fine with that. So, I get tomorrow off and I’m going to the zoo with the boyfriend!

It’s important to work hard and especially to work hard to be able to achieve your goals and dreams, but you always have to make sure you save a little bit of time to do things for yourself and have fun.  It can’t just be all work and no play.  :]

P.S. I’m sooo happy the sun is finally out and it is PERFECT running weather!

Happy Monday :]
