Hello from the Windy City! This Friday I am in Chicago, Illinois for the 2012 National College Media Convention. I am so excited to be here and, so far, it’s been a lot of fun! World famous deep dish pizza, a full mile of amazing shopping, a Starbucks on every corner… what more could a girl ask for? Don’t worry; a full post will come soon enough about my experience here!

One of my favorite things to happen this past week was the spontaneous rainy day drive that my friends and I took. We hopped in the car and drove around the countryside for a few hours to get our last look of the colorful fall leaves before the trees become bare for the winter season. We of course decided that lattes were a must and stopped at the coziest, little Starbucks to warm up from the cold. We also made a special trip to Bath and Body Works and received free mini candles (which made my day, considering my obsession with candles)! Later on that evening we lugged our lap tops and backpacks to Panera for a homework night. We sat by the fire, pulled out the books and got some study time in. I have often found that the spur-of-the-moment things we do turn out to be the most memorable. Lesson learned: cold, rainy days are perfect for relaxing, long car rides with your best girlfriends, stops for lattes and lots of girl talk.

I hope everyone has a great weekend filled with spontaneous moments that turn into favorite memories.

Happy Friday!

Happy Halloween!

Instead of going out this year, my friends and I decided to switch things up and have a Halloween party of our own. Since I am considering event planning as a future career, I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to get some practice! So, I told them to sit back and relax as I began the planning process. As a college student on a tight budget, I had to get creative for decorations and Halloween treats, but in the end I think everything worked out great.

I bought orange and black balloons and made signs on the computer for decorations. Of course, we had mulled hot apple cider, which was perfect on the cold, rainy night. I used old frappuccino bottles for our cider and decorated them with black and white ribbon to make them a bit more festive. In order to get some inspiration for Halloween treats, I turned to Pinterest. I fell in love with the cute nutter butter cookies turned ghosts and wanted to try them right away. I ended up making white chocolate covered pretzels as well (both treats found here). They were simple to make and perfect to snack on.

The ghosts and pretzels were both huge hits at the party! However, the ghosts were my personal favorite. Not only were they adorable, I mean uhh spooky? … but they were yummy as well. I am now trying to find a reason to justify why I would make these ghosts for any other occasion, since I don’t want to wait until next October to try them again! Hmm… maybe we can celebrate the Chinese Ghost Festival from now on? My friends Emily and Maggie also brought graham crackers and delicious pumpkin dip that they made!

During the party we played Halloween Bingo, with Reese’s Pieces as bingo markers (beware: purchasing a big bag of the candy may be necessary since the “markers” just magically seemed to disappear throughout the game … whoops!). There were even prizes for the first three winners: Reese’s Pumpkins, everyone’s favorite!

We ended the night by piling into the living room and popping in the horror movie “Prom Night.”

Everyone had so much fun at the Halloween party and we are already planning future holiday get-togethers. You don’t need a lot of money to have fun. Even without any of the treats or decorations, I am sure that I would have had just as much fun with the wonderful group of friends that I am so blessed to have found at Mount Union.

I hope everyone’s day is filled with no tricks, but plenty of treats!

The first week back from fall break flew by! This week was full of exciting surprises (many made this week’s “Friday Five”). The weather on Thursday was absolutely beautiful. Just about everyone on campus was outside and loving the sun. I tried to enjoy every second of it since snow flurries are on the forecast for next week. After a good work out at the MAAC on Thursday, I remembered that I had a free smoothie coupon to use at the B&B! I was sent an e-mail a while back asking me to complete a survey. After I submitted it, I received a free smoothie coupon. It seemed silly not to take advantage of the coupon with the 80-degree weather. So, attention all Mount students: TAKE THE SURVEY! When you’re sipping on your “Paradise” smoothie (strawberry, mango & peach), you will find that it was well worth the exchange of five minutes of your time.

This weekend I am throwing a little Halloween party for some friends! I am always up for any get-together that involves balloons, hot apple cider and games, so I am pretty excited. I also plan to spend a full day catching up on my “fun reading.” I absolutely love reading and it’s hard to find time to do so with all of the homework, studying and reading for class. However, this weekend I am determined to make time to relax and read the new book I just bought (seen here), which is said to be a must read if you love The Hunger Games, which I do!

I hope everyone has a great weekend! Happy Friday!

Although I am sad that fall break has come to an end, I am so excited for the drive back to Mount Union! As I’m sure many of you know, Taylor Swift’s new album “Red” was released Tuesday. My sister and I made a trip to Target in order to get the deluxe version of “Red,” which includes six additional songs. I immediately tore open the wrapper so we could listen to the CD on our way home, but the 15-minute drive just didn’t cut it. I can’t wait to get on the road and make the trip back to school so I have a full 50 minutes to jam out to Tay’s new hits.

One of the greatest things about Mount, for me, is the location. I love the 50-minute drive. While making a “pros and cons” list when determining which college to attend, many will put “location” under Mount’s cons. At first glance, Alliance, Ohio is definitely not the most appealing city. However, it has its perks! I love that Mount is far enough from home so that I have my independence, yet it is close enough so that I can make a trip home whenever I am feeling a bit homesick, need a pick-me-up from my family or don’t want to miss out on a birthday or get-together. Tomorrow morning’s drive will be perfect for an iced latte, gorgeous fall scenery and listening to “Red” on the highest volume possible.

Taylor Swift is such a great role model for college women. Her songs are relatable and inspirational. She’s 22 years old and going through many of the same things that we are all going through. I know what you’re thinking… her life is nothing like yours. She sings her heart out on stage at sold-out concerts while you sing into a hairbrush when getting ready for class. You live in Ohio while she travels around the world, sipping lattes in Paris and eating sushi in Japan. She has dated the boys that you have posters of on your dorm room walls… such as Taylor Lautner (guilty), Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal. However, Taylor goes through ups and downs, love and heartbreaks, happiness and disappointments; just like we do.

Promise to give “Red” a chance before shooting it down. Taylor Swift truly has the most sincere heart and I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful role model to look up to and be inspired by daily.

P.S. I am apologizing in advance since I will most likely be “that annoying girl” blaring T.Swift’s new songs while dancing in the apartment, running in the MAAC and jamming out in the car next to you.

[The leaves changing colors on campus make Mount so pretty in the fall]

This week consisted of studying, sleeping, studying, homework, studying.. and a little more studying on top of that. It is crazy that it is already time for midterms! We are on week nine of the fall semester and more than halfway through. I can’t believe how fast time is flying. While I am definitely a summer girl, fall is one of my favorite times of the year. Mount’s campus has never looked so colorful! Walking to class at 7:30 a.m. doesn’t bother me as much when everything surrounding me is so pretty.

Fall break is finally here and, although I will miss being at Mount this weekend, I am excited to spend time with my family at home. My fall break plans include catching up on all of my favorite shows (The Vampire Diaries and Grey’s Anatomy), breakfast and a trip to White House Fruit Farms with my grandma, movie night with my sister, Sunday morning church and family dinners. Mom is planning to make my favorite meal, lasagna! Oh, how I’ve missed home cooked meals. Although I have my own kitchen in my apartment at Mount (score!), Mom’s meals definitely beat out any of my own.

I am not sure if it was because of my anticipation of fall break, but this week my five things are all centered around fall. Happy Friday & happy fall break!

The Countdown has Begun

Two Sundays ago marked the start of my three-month countdown until studying abroad in Italy! I leave on January 7. I cannot believe in three short months I will be flying half way across the world, making Italy my new home for almost half a year. The thought is so exciting, yet terrifying at the same time.

I have always dreamed of traveling. One of my best friends, Olivia, and I would always talk about how one day we would live in Paris and own our own cafe. We even planned to call it “Alyssa Deann” after our middle names. I always imagined riding a vespa around Rome, like the Olsen twins in When in Rome, and tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain, just like Hilary in the Lizzie McGuire Movie. Watching these movies growing up always made me more determined to one day turn those fairytale moments into reality. I am scared to death, but there is no going back now! I am so happy that I am pushing myself to be fearless. I think Taylor Swift would be proud (yes, I am probably T. Swift’s biggest fan)!

While the thought may be scary, if you are at all interested in studying abroad, I suggest that you talk to Dawn Adams at the Center for Global Education in van den Eynden Hall. Even if you are on the fence about traveling abroad, promise that you’ll find out more! You will never regret taking the time to look into such a wonderful opportunity.

As my countdown continues, I created a bucket list of the things that I want to make absolute sure I do while I am in Europe. I am so excited to see what I get to cross off the list!

“Friday Five” is all about things that I am currently loving, inspired by, or things that simply make me smile. Throughout the week, I find that it is most often the small things that can make my day that much better…

“…If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” While doing the reading assignment for American Literature this week, I came across this quote by Thoreau. Instead of the boring read that I was expecting, I felt myself inspired to follow my dreams after reading his words.

Oreo milkshake = the perfect pick me up in the middle of the week. I especially needed this during my week full of studying, tests and group meetings! Homecoming Week is one of the craziest, yet most fun, weeks here at Mount Union!

One of the highlights of my week was a trip to the movie theater with the roomies. Sometimes you just need a little get-away. We took a trip to Canton this Wednesday night and caught a late showing of the movie “Pitch Perfect.” Here’s a tip: Wednesday night is student ID night at Cinemark Tinseltown, so you get a discount if you bring your Mount ID!

The constant reminders on Twitter that my favorite show EVER, The Vampire Diaries, was coming back for a fourth season made me so excited! I have really missed the Salvatore brothers, Damon and Stefan, played by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. The men of The Vampire Diaries are easily the most attractive men on television. Yay for season four!

Opening my campus mailbox to see that I got a package or envelope from home is always one of the best things.

Happy Friday, everyone!

A Glimpse of Me

A Glimpse of Me

Hi everyone! I am so excited to begin blogging for Mount Union, but figured that I should start off with an introduction. I didn’t want to write a boring paragraph about myself, so that’s when my sister stepped in to interview me. Hopefully this will give you a glimpse into what makes me, me…

What is your favorite season?

I am a summer girl for sure. Ice cream (moose tracks & cookie dough = love), sun, the beach, my birthday, family picnics, fireworks, swimming… does it get any better?

What qualities do you consider make a good friend?

Someone who is loyal, genuine and honest. Someone I can be myself around, who is supportive of my goals and dreams, and will put up with my crazy OCD when it comes to cleaning and my unhealthy obsession with Justin Bieber.

What makes you angry?

Hmm.. those who intentionally hurt my friends and family, inconsiderate people, when the Ellen show gets interrupted for breaking news, and when Panera runs out of cinnamon crunch bagels. Oh and those scary, black squirrels on campus. They are up to something, I know it.

Why did you choose Mount Union? Out of every college campus I visited, Mount Union made me instantly feel at home. The environment was so friendly and I knew right away that this is where I wanted to spend the next four years. The delicious strawberry waffles offered at the cafeteria Saturday mornings didn’t hurt either…

What is your favorite spot on campus?

The campus lakes. Especially in the fall, Mount’s campus is so pretty.

What is your favorite quote?

“To me, fearless is not the absence of fear. It’s not being completely unafraid. To me, fearless is having fears. Fearless is having doubts. Lots of them. To me, fearless is living in spite of those things that scare you to death.” – Miss Taylor Swift

What are some of your hopes and dreams?

  1. Travel the world (first stop: Italy!! I leave in January!)
  2. Obtain my dream job (involving journalism, design and event planning) and possibly own my own wedding and event planning business
  3. Find ‘the one’, my best friend, someone with the same morals and values as me, someone who loves God, someone who will always put God and his family above all else (or Justin Bieber.. that would be fine too. Sorry, Selena.)
  4. Be a mommy (a family complete with a golden retriever puppy, of course)
  5. Make at least one person smile each and every day
