I didn’t have a laptop before I came to college and my parents were actually debating if I should even get one or not. They talked to Mount Union and asked about how many computers were available to determine if I really needed one. Thankfully, I did enough begging that regardless of what the school said, they bought me one anyway. If you are questioning the importance of a laptop (or your parents are) keep reading because I have knowledge of both sides of the coin!

My roommate’s laptop cord broke right before fall break so she took it home with her. When she came back from break she didn’t bring it with her (I forget the exact reason why). Overall, she does pretty well without it. We have a computer lab right down the hall from our room in our residence hall so it’s pretty convenient. Each floor doesn’t have its own computer lab though, so if you lived on the third floor you would have to come way down to the lobby. Sometimes a lot of people decide to use the computers all at once (we only have three) so she would either have to wait or go to the library if she really needed it at that point in time. Sometimes she mentions how she wishes she had a laptop so she could be in the comfort of her bed while she does work. Personally I believe it’s your own preference.

Mount Union does have a lot of computer labs and random computers in the library for you to use if you don’t have your own, so don’t stress too much if your parents send you without one. For me, my laptop isn’t just a laptop. It’s also my TV, movie player and music player. We don’t own a TV, so if I want to watch sports or some other show online I can do so without having to leave my bed. Same is true for a DVD.

Also, I don’t do a lot of studying in the library. I prefer to be in the comfort of my residence hall where anything I could possibly need or want is accessible. If I were in the library all the time studying it’d be no problem just to hop on the school computers and use that to complete what I needed. Not all the computers are in labs either. They are in more quiet areas for when you really want silence or to focus. So in conclusion, you can survive without a laptop (like many other things) but it does have its benefits.

Some people come to school with the hope of becoming best friends with their roommate. Yet this does not always happen. Sometimes you are so different that you can’t stand to live together anymore and have to move out midsemester. A few people I know went through this process and ended up by themselves in a room for the rest of the semester. For some, it was not that easy and they had to stick it out the rest of semester. If you do end up with someone who you do not get along with very well and cannot move out immediately, there is still a way to solve the issue. You can change dorms and roommates for the following semester.

So if it doesn’t work out, you can find someone else to room with or you can get another random roommate and try it out again! Always be sure to keep an open mind about who you room with though. Don’t be quick to judge – people can surprise you. Also, if you and your roommate want to move into a different dorm you can request to do so as well! Personally, I regret choosing Cunningham over McMaster, but my roommate and I wanted to stay together and didn’t think there would be enough empty rooms. The spring request forms were just given to us so we didn’t realize what we actually wanted until after filling out the forms. We also were not informed beforehand that we would be able to switch for the spring semester. So hopefully this gives you a heads up for your options next year!! I wish you the best roommate luck :) “Life’s what you make it,” and so is living with someone new!

Now that Thanksgiving is over with, everyone is getting out there Christmas decorations and really making the dorms look festive. A few people even decorated before Thanksgiving out of impatience and excitement for the season! I really think Christmas lights around the ceiling look the prettiest, especially colored ones! My roommate and I did not bring decorations from home so after class on Wednesday we made plans to go out and buy some lights to get even more in the Christmas spirit.

Every day while we do homework and chill out in the room, we blare Christmas music and sing along. We have also watched a few Christmas movies on ABC Family already! Unfortunately, we do not have a TV in our room, but thankfully there are some online so we still have access :) I’m glad that she is as much into the season as I am. I would not be able to have a Grinch as a roommate around Christmas time because I love it too much. I have a friend on my floor who has a roommate who doesn’t even like to talk about Christmas! Who doesn’t like talking about Christmas?! It’s the most wonderful time of the year!!

I can’t wait for it to start snowing because that makes it feel even more like Christmas. Tonight I think we are going to get at least a little. It was flurrying earlier! Over Thanksgiving break it snowed at Mount Union and even in Northwestern Pennsylvania such as Pittsburgh and Erie, but not down near Philly where I leave. Last year it only snowed once on October 29. It was a HUGE storm, but it didn’t snow during actual winter at all! During my freshman year of high school, my birthday became a snow day and it was just perfect! My birthday is in March though, so that usually doesn’t happen.

The last time I was at Mount Union in February it snowed and the campus looked even more beautiful :) I can’t wait until it gets like that again! I probably won’t be too happy walking to class but just seeing snow will be worth it :) If you come to school here, and you don’t know it already, it does get pretty harsh in the winter. So, if you’re not used to that, you might want to mentally prepare for it! Winter coats, gloves and sometimes hats are recommended for your survival :)

One of my first peer pressures of college was to create a Twitter account. It was about the third week of school and I got tired of all my friends complaining about me not having a Twitter and egging me on to finally create one. Before I came to college I was completely against it, although I didn’t exactly know how it worked. I knew that you followed people instead of mutually being friends, which I didn’t really like, and that people just posted what they were doing pretty much every second. I just didn’t see the need for one. Instead, I was more than content on Facebook. The first few days on Twitter were rough because I was completely confused as to what was going on. All I knew how to do was tweet. I tried finding people, but it wasn’t as easy as loading in my Facebook friends. I had to search for everyone! I wasted A LOT of time with it the first few days I had it. After a couple of weeks, I pretty much knew what I was doing. My roommate had one, even though she barely used it, and she was able to help me out most times when I needed it. I definitely liked using Twitter on my iPod (no I am not team iPhone, but I am about to be team Samsung Galaxy on Black Friday) rather than on the computer, which is the opposite of Facebook. Now that I have had one for about two months, I see some definite differences, both good and bad, in each social media channel.

Good about Facebook: You can share more photos easier, which is a huge plus for me because I take TONS and tons of pictures! I love capturing as many moments of my life as possible. Facebook is better for instant messaging people. I don’t think I have ever direct messaged anyone on Twitter. You can also put if you are in a relationship and share more about yourself on Facebook. You can also show a little bit about your personality by liking different pages for movies, books, etc. Facebook also lets you share a lot more about yourself, such as the places you visit, where you go to school, etc.

That leads us to the bad about Facebook: I think it’s too personal. People can find out where you work, places you have visited recently, where you live, where you go to school, your birthday, pretty much YOUR WHOLE LIFE. I think this can be problematic, especially for younger teens who are not properly informed about how to protect themselves online from predators. Even with relatively good security that hides your profile from outsiders, not everyone takes advantage of this or knows how to set it up.

Good about Twitter: It’s very casual. It shows your name and a small blurb about yourself and that’s it. You choose what you put and don’t have to feel pressured to add details such as where you live. It also doesn’t add the location of your last tweet, like Facebook status’ do, unless you want it to. One time I turned location services on Facebook and I can’t turn it off now on my iPod. Twitter also lets you say what’s on your mind. On Facebook it’s not as socially acceptable to post 10 statuses in 20 minutes, but on Twitter it is acceptable to tweet 20 things in 10 minutes. I also love using emoji’s on Twitter! Retweeting is a wonderful invention for the things you think but are too afraid to actually say and quoting what others say and adding your own comments to it is also neat! Maybe it’s just because I’m still kind of new to Twitter that it fascinates me so much, but I am definitely team Twitter right now! I hate when I’m on Facebook and someone puts a quote as their status and I get the urge to re-post it but I can’t.

One bad thing about Twitter, people you don’t even know can follow you and get information through the people you retweet and through what you tweet. This can be prevented though by making the follow request be approved by you before they can view your tweets and follow you.

What side are you on? :)

This past Sunday I got a surprise when I walked into the cafeteria. Instead of the usual stations being opened, everything was closed, the tables were covered with table clothes and decorations and people were waiting for food in the front and back of the cafe. It was a make-shift Thanksgiving dinner! I had read on the napkin dispensers a few times about them holding this and about reserving a table, but my friends and I never got around to it. Thankfully, they still let us in. We just had to sit on the sides instead of in the middle at the fancy tables. The people at the middle tables actually got their own turkey to carve themselves! I was pretty surprised when I saw that. The meal consisted of salad, cranberries, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans and of course, turkey. Usually I am not a stuffing person, but the cooking crew did an EXCELLENT job with the stuffing and it was my favorite part of the whole meal!

Although they had green beans, they didn’t have my favorite homemade dish – green bean casserole. My mom’s green bean casserole, biscuits and cavateals are my favorite dishes at my Thanksgiving meal. I think Mount Union did a really good job with their ‘dinner’ though! For dessert, they even had pumpkin, apple, peach and cherry pie! I got a slice of cherry with some vanilla gelato. That was the first time I ever got something besides a cookie or gelato from the dessert stand, but the pie was incredible! I do prefer cherry tarts that my grandmother makes a little bit more though because crumble crust is my favorite! The meal actually got me really excited for Thanksgiving!!

Tomorrow is our last day of classes and then we resume again on Monday. It’s short but I’m still happy to get to be with my family and friends, even if it is only for a little while. Then, three weeks later, the semester is over! This year is just flying by! I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!! :) Be thankful for all you have and give when possible to those who have less than you. Tis’ the season :)

So this weekend was an unfortunate one. Besides spending hours and hours studying for exams and quizzes on the two days before break, I lost one of the most important things I have here … my key! I was out Saturday night and didn’t have any pockets, so I put my key and Purple Plu$ Card into my sports bra so I could keep them with me. I thought I wouldn’t be able to lose it, but of course the universe proved me wrong. As I was leaving one of the fraternities, I realized my key was no longer with my Purple Plu$. Thankfully I was with my friend and she told me I could stay in her room. It was pretty late at night, I was tired and figured I could come back the next day to look for my key. I told my roommate about the situation and she was very nice about leaving the door open for me so I could still get in when I needed. While in the cafeteria on Sunday morning, I ran into someone from the fraternity. I asked them if he could keep an eye out for it during cleaning today. We were friends with each other on Facebook and planned to communicate through there about it. I felt at least a little better about it after talking with them; I felt a little bit of hope. My friend, who I stayed the night with, told me it would be about $50 to replace, so that thought was still looming in my mind. I went all Sunday without it. Monday came and I still had not heard anything, so in the afternoon I messaged the person I spoke to previously. He said nothing turned up at chapter house, but he would ask the president just in case he had it or knew about its whereabouts. At about the same time I was discussing this with him, I got an email from someone at the Information Desk. It turns out someone turned my key in to them! I was so happy to hear that! I literally danced around my room for a while cheering because it felt like such a weight off my shoulders. My roommate was really happy for me as well and we went right away to claim my key.

I also got lucky with something else I lost earlier in the weekend. I usually wear my moccasins and sweatpants when I go to the gym and then change into sneakers at the actual gym. On Friday, I was in a rush leaving and forgot to pick up my moccasins on my way out! It took until Sunday for me to realize where I had misplaced them, which is a miracle because I’m very forgetful and sometimes it never comes back. I emailed my boss right away, who works in the gym, and asked where I could find them if I left them there. Before he had a chance to respond, I went to the gym and found my shoes exactly where I left them! I was so grateful no one had taken them!

So with my key and shoes found, my chemistry exam over and 16 hours left until I can go home, I am feeling great!! I wish I could keep this luck around forever!

A fun event that just took place between the sororities and fraternities on campus was Greek Sing. All throughout last week, the four sororities and four fraternities competed in different events against each other to gain the most points.

Sunday – Service Project
Monday – Can Castles
Tuesday – Greek Olympics
Wednesday – Letter Writing Campaign for St. Jude’s Hospital
Thursday – Greek Sing

Greek Sing is actually more about dancing than singing. The groups perform two group dances, one girls dance and one guys dance with little skits in between. The lyrics of two of the songs must be changed! The theme of all of Greek Week was the USA, so each group picked a state. My sorority picked Tennessee, so naturally it was country themed. I was so happy to get to be part of this experience because it was such a fun time and I got even closer with my sisters. We had practice for two and a half weeks before actual Greek Sing, so a lot of time was put into making it the best we could. The song the girls danced to was by Jessica Simpson called “These Boots Are Made for Walking.” The song the guys danced to was “Country Girl Shake it For Me” by Luke Bryan, which is one of my absolute favorite songs! The two group dances were the songs we changed the lyrics to – “Crazy Town” and “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.”

Unfortunately we were on the stage two seconds over the time limit, so we ended up getting third place for Greek Sing. Overall, we took second place though! I’ve attached the link to the YouTube video of our dances if you’d like to check them out! It’s only nine minutes long :) Comment with any feedback from it!

This morning started a little rough. Although my alarm clock has an automated preset to change for daylight savings time, it was unfortunately somehow set for the wrong date. I know that because Sunday morning I had to change the clock back automatically. I forgot that it changed back automatically so I thought it was like a regular clock that you had to set back manually. Last night it decided that it wanted to change back on its own, so of course it didn’t go off at 6:45 a.m. like I needed it too. My roommate’s alarm thankfully went off at 7:20 a.m., giving me 10 minutes to get dressed and get to class. I was tempted to just not go and just look at the missed notes online, but we had a quiz scheduled that I wouldn’t be able to make up. So, it was very important that I went to class!!

In the beginning of the year (September), I did miss my chemistry class. I was up late doing homework and by the time I got into bed I forgot to set my alarm. So of course I did not get up in time for my 7:30 a.m. class because I slept right through until my roommate’s alarm went off. I was so panicked and didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t that bad though because I emailed my professor and he just told me how far we got in the notes, which were already online. I just had chemistry last year, so we were still covering material that I was familiar with which made it easier to catch up.

Don’t make skipping class a habit! But if it does happen every now and then, just make sure you contact your professor right away. Make sure you are there for exams and quizzes because professors are much stricter with them and you usually can’t make them up!

Another exciting event that happened within my first month here was losing my wallet in the library. On Friday’s, I usually spend my afternoons in the library working on my lab report because I only have one morning class. I bring my laptop and a drink and go to one of the remote corners of the library to be alone. On this particular Friday I was multitasking and had some other papers that needed to be printed. So after working on my lab for about an hour, I packed up my stuff and headed to the bathroom for a quick break. From there, I found one of the library computer stations so I could print out what I needed. After that, I went back up to my little area to finish my lab report. I finished it in a couple hours and realized I was missing something as I was packing up.

Back then, I kept my Purple Plu$ and key on my Vera Bradley wallet. I cleared the table and then started searching all the pockets in my book bag for where I might have thrown it in during the entire shuffle. Soon I realized it was nowhere to be found! So I tried to remember the last time I had it. I was pretty sure I had it up until I went to the bathroom, then after that I couldn’t remember. I tried back tracking my steps: checked the floor around the desk I was at, asked if the reference person if someone turned it in and checked the bathroom. It wasn’t in any of those places though, but I continued to search a few more times just because I couldn’t think of where else it would be. Clearly, I had forgotten about going to the computers to print, because not once did it cross my mind to go check there. So next I tried to see if anyone from the actual circulation desk saw or turned it in. They had nothing, but suggested I call campus security or check the information desk in HPCC. This literally could not have happened at a worse day, though. It was 3:30 p.m. and I was scheduled to leave for a high school football game at my friend’s old school at 4 p.m. sharp. So with that looming, it made me even more stressed to find it!

I started walking toward my dorm to get the number for campus security and called my friend to let her know the situation. I told her I didn’t know if I’d be able to go or not because I felt like I needed to figure out where my wallet was first because it literally had all my cards, Purple Plu$, money and keys. She said to just try my best to locate it and if I needed a few extra minutes it was OK, but I knew she had a tight time schedule to stick to because of a hair appointment she had scheduled at home. I called campus security in my friend’s room but they said no one had turned anything in. So I set off to my last hope, the information desk. As I was walking in, I ran into my roommate luckily, so I could get into our room. We both went to the Information Desk and they said they didn’t have it. The lady asked if I wanted to report it stolen, basically freeze it for the weekend, but in the end I didn’t do that due to an instinctual gut feeling. She said she could get me a temporary Purple Plu$ card though so I could get into my dorm, which took care of half of the problem. My roommate and I made our way back to our dorm after I got my temporary card and it was five minutes before 4 p.m. I was prepared to tell my friend I’d have to miss out on our trip. On the way, my roommate asked questions about the situation and where I had already looked and suddenly I remembered how I had been at the computers but didn’t check there. I immediately told her that I thought I knew where it was but if I was to be ready by four I wouldn’t be able to go and check. My roommate graciously volunteered to go check while I got ready to leave and if she found it she would just put it on my desk. At this point, I was feeling a wave of relief because I was pretty confident she would find it there and I would be able to still go with my friend to the football game. I got ready while she set off for the library and right as we were pulling out of the parking lot she called me and said she had it. I can’t even express how happy I was at that point and how grateful I was that she went to check for me!

Thus concludes the case of the missing wallet, with everything as it should be. :)

Since everyone is a bit down from the current weather due to the hurricane, I thought I’d share some funny stories that have happened between my roommate and me since I’ve been to Mount.

The first “mishap” occurred only a few weeks after school started. At this point in time my roommate and I had our beds parallel to one another near the window. One day while I was at class, my roommate was climbing down her ladder and she completely just fell backward and knocked into a bunch of my stuff. After that, she just kinda laid there appalled at the fact that she actually just fell. The sound must have been loud because everyone who had been in the hall at that point came rushing over to see what happened. I guess it’s a good thing that we live on the first floor. I can’t imagine what it would’ve sounded like to the people below us. Oh, and my roommate wasn’t hurt at all, if you were concerned.

The next occurrence was only a couple weeks later. I kept trying to open and close our blinds but was having the worst of luck. We have a cord to pull them open and close but it always seemed to be stuck. My friends talked about how they just opened and closed them by pulling on them so I thought I could try that. That only got them opened and closed so far. I was really bothered by the closing factor because we live on the first floor with guys living across from us. There would always be a little sliver of the blinds that wouldn’t close all the way that I was afraid you could see through. I was complaining about how I wished we had blinds that worked and my roommate said she would try to get it. Well she took the one side of the blinds completely off the track… I just kind of stood there stunned as she started freaking out that she broke it. Then she found a piece of something on the ground and accidentally pricked her finger with it and started bleeding a little. I said I hoped that it was sterile and then she started going crazy about getting some sort of disease. I really couldn’t help it but just start dying from laughter because she was so panicked. When I came back after going to the bathroom to contain myself, she found a guy in the hall to fix it and it was good as new. We haven’t touched them since.

The next instance that happened actually more than once is sleep talking. My roommate and I have both done this to each other. My roommate did it first. I get up way earlier than her on Tuesday and Thursday’s so I try to keep quiet while she sleeps. Apparently one morning I made a sound that either startled her or she was having a weird dream and she completely sat up in bed. Shot up like a rocket basically, which startled me. I said her name and she said something like “hi” then just fell down onto her bed. When I told her about it later that day she had no recollection. A couple of weeks ago, I did something similar to her. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday’s I come back and nap after my first class. My roommate sometimes comes back after her class at 10 a.m., and this particular morning she did and I heard her come in. I looked at the clock and got confused and started yelling at her about how I have class and I’m going to be late and just started completely freaking out. Somehow she settled me down or I realized it was nap time and I was OK. Then I turned over and my roommate asked me a question literally a minute later that I don’t remember her asking at all or hearing her leave a few minutes later. When I woke up all I remembered was I was freaking out when she came in but none of the details.

Hopefully if you are experiencing the bad weather like we are these helped give you a good laugh for the day. As you can tell, you really do make a lot of memories with your roommate even if you aren’t trying. Things just happen. They make for great stories later though!
